Is it true that the Continental Hotel will be demolished? Should we care?

    • John Atkin says:

The demolition of the old Continental Hotel won’t be much of a loss. The hotel was badly compromised by the construction of the Granville Bridge in the 1950s, where it was left stranded inside the eastern loop of the bridge. The hotel is probably best known for the whale mural on the south face of the building and that is being carefully recorded to create a digital archive of the art work. The City has assessed the building and the very few artifacts there are, such as the original saloon doors, will be removed.

There is a good grouping of Parr and Fee designed hotels further north on Granville Street and they are not at risk. All of them are much better examples of the firm’s work than the Continental.
