Steven Spielberg ‘disagrees’ with the Oscar’s decision to award eight categories before the show

Steven Spielberg has spoken up about his disapproval over the Motion Picture Academy’s decision to pre-record eight Oscar categories.

The new schedule would mean that eight awards would be handed out in the hour before the actual Oscar telecast begins at 5 pm PT on March 27, in order to save time and keep the show to three hours.

‘I disagree with the decision made by the executive committee,’ the Schindler’s List director, 75, said in a new interview with Deadline.

Spielberg – who has been nominated for the prestigious award 19 times and has won three times – went on to express that making movies is a collaborative art.

‘I feel very strongly that this is perhaps the most collaborative medium in the world. All of us make movies together, we become a family where one craft is just as indispensable as the next,’ the filmmaker said.

‘I feel that at the Academy Awards there is no above the line, there is no below the line. All of us are on the same line bringing the best of us to tell the best stories we possibly can,’ he continued.

‘And that means for me we should all have a seat at the supper table together live at 5,’ he stated.

The categories that will not be shown during the main telecast are Production Design, Sound, Original Music Score, Makeup and Hairstyling, Film Editing, Documentary Short, Live Action Short, and Animated Short.

Spielberg’s latest hit movie, West Side Story, is up for seven Oscars, and two of its nominations for Production Design and Sound are in the categories that would not be aired.

The influential director – who serves on the Academy’s Board of Governors – is also nominated for Director and the film is up for Best Picture.

Hollywood’s best known director reflected on the importance of sound and design in filmmaking.

‘When I look back and I think without John Williams, Jaws would wear dentures. With West Side Story, when Tony is singing “Tonight” with Maria, without (Production Designer) Adam Stockhausen he would be singing it on a step-ladder and she would be on the scaffolding, all this on an empty soundstage.’

‘Without film editing all my movies would still be in dailies,’ he observed.

‘We all come together to make magic, and I am sad that we will all not be on live television watching magic happen together,’ he added

The ET the Extra-Terrestrial director also added that though he has ‘tremendous respect’ for his fellow governors, he hopes the decision will be reversed.

‘I hope it’s reversed, but I’m not anticipating a reversal and I am not optimistic about it,’ he revealed.

The Academy has previously attempted a similar move in 2018, announcing that several awards would be presented off the air at the 2019 Oscars, but due to immense industry backlash they deserted the plan.
