An all-new original adventure guided and designed by Eiichiro Oda himself, One Piece Odyssey promises a massive JRPG experience with pirates.
The Straw Hats are back for another entirely original adventure guided by the brilliant vision of Eiichiro Oda himself in One Piece Odyssey. A new JRPG adventure developed by ILCA Inc., One Piece Odyssey is a massive new story set in the One Piece universe that immerses players in the unique pirate world with dungeons, puzzles, quests, and classic turn-based combat. Players will join the salty Straw Hat crew as they explore new islands and mysterious oceans under the ever-watchful gaze of the Five Elders.
Though not much is known about the story of One Piece Odyssey, fans of the anime can see from the announcement trailer that it contains everything needed for an authentic pirate adventure. Highlighting some of the crew’s finishing moves and the synergy between them, the trailer shows a glimpse of the Straw Hats in their prime. With platforming mechanics, exploration, and puzzle-solving, the trailer does an excellent job of displaying everything One Piece Odyssey has to offer.
One Piece Odyssey’s Trailer
The trailer was released on March 28 during the celebrations for One Piece’s 25 Anniversary. The game has been in development for at least three years, but the time seems well spent as the trailer showcases impressive environments, snappy battles, and the iconic silliness One Piece is known for. Fans of the series can listen in during the trailer to hear the work of renowned composer Motoi Sakuraba, the composer for the Tales and Dark Souls series.
“Jump into a time of tears and laughter,” the trailer declares. Players will find a sneak peek of several of the dungeons and puzzles to overcome in One Piece Odyssey throughout the trailer, as well as forgotten ruins, pristine beaches, and plenty of enemies. Eiichiro Oda’s touch can be seen everywhere, from the design of the Kung-Fu Dugongs to the presentation of Adio Suerte, the Straw Hat’s newest ally. The trailer even shows a brief scene of the mysterious and powerful Five Elders, One Piece Odyssey‘s potential antagonists, plotting in their gilded offices.
What Is One Piece Odyssey About?
After being swallowed by a raging storm, Monkey D. Luffy awakes on an unfamiliar island without his crew. Though the game allows players to take control of the entire Straw Hat crew, Luffy will need to find them first. Zoro, Nami, Usopp, Sanji, Chopper, Robin, Franky, and Brook all await discovery somewhere on the island, and it’s up to Luffy — and his new friend, Adio Suerte — to find them. “This point in history never should have happened . . .” a voice says in the trailer, hinting at more than just a comical romp for the Straw Hats in their latest adventure.
The story of One Piece Odyssey was developed in part with Eiichiro Oda and will be canon in the One Piece timeline. Fans of the series can look for a story and world crafted not just by the creator but also by dedicated fans of his long-running work. “I hope to deliver an epic drama adventure of the Straw Hats that which both One Piece fans and fans of JRPGs can experience and enjoy,” said the game’s main producer, Katsuaki Tsuzuki. Eiichiro Oda seems to think they’ve succeeded, saying, “What incredible immersion!! I felt like I was watching A MOVIIIIE!!!”
When Will One Piece Odyssey Release?
One Piece Odyssey is currently planned to release at some point in 2022, and it will be available on PlayStation, PC, and Xbox. Fans of the series may have waited a long time for an authentic One Piece gaming adventure, but the wait seems well worth it. The trailer alone captures the heart and quality of One Piece‘s unique world while showing off the genuine camaraderie of the crew.
One Piece Odyssey‘s announcement should have JRPG and One Piece fans alike celebrating. The characters, settings, and story are made by creators with a passion for quality content, and the trailer shows it. With a combination of award-winning writing, music composition, and game development, One Piece Odyssey is sure to wow gamers when it drops later this year.
