Here’s a further non-market housing project in the Downtown Eastside. This one will face Oppenheimer Park, and will have 55 units to be managed by SUCCESS for the Ming Sun Benevolent Society, designed by Boni Maddison architects. To maximize units and provide sufficient quality of daylight the building is structured around an internal courtyard.
It will replace an 1891 building operated by the society that was in working and occupied until late July 2013. It housed 8 maintained and low-income, affordable Single Room Occupancy units, studio spaces for the Instant Coffee Collective, and was home to the Ming Sun Reading Room. The closure of the building, due to damage after a badly managed demolition of an adjacent building resulted in the displacement of 10 low-income seniors.
