Centre for Digital Media

Here’s the first building (finally!) being built on the Great Northern Way campus shared by all Vancouver’s significant post-secondary institutions. This Musson Cattell Mackey designed building has 76 rental studios for students as well as a 15,000 square feet meeting, teaching and studio space for a centre that will house the Masters of Digital Media Program. It’s a seriously contemporary design (some parts remind us of MCM’s Robert Ho Centre, some of Bing Thom’s new Surrey library). It’s also supposedly very green, and in a somewhat wordy gesture the architects say “A singular ribbon, folding and bending, collects these uses to engage the street as the catalyst marker on the site. The wrapping gesture is directional to reflect the orientation of the student housing and to minimize solar heat gain on the east and west elevations. The folds cascade down the facade opening itself and presenting the lobby entry at the west corner of the building. “
