Science World

While BC Place’s conversion from a mushroom to a web gets most of the attention, the six-legged spider at the end of False Creek has been receiving a substantial makeover – and unlike the stadium it has stayed open. Science World is expanding, reconfiguring and adding new exterior panels and glazing. Now much of the building has come out of its temporary wrapping, and the colours are definitely different from the earlier version of the building. The yellow seems a little bland, and the blue a bit washed out, but the red (and there’s a lot of it!) and orange contrast really effectively with the new metal skin. The dome (with the city’s only Imax screen now BC Place has closed) was repaired and given new LED lighting in 2010. Once the new building is completed there are plans for an outdoor element to the display.
